Sports Development Programme

1. Programme Overview

The Sports Development Programme aims to identify, nurture, and support athletic talent within the community while promoting healthy lifestyles, teamwork, discipline, and social cohesion. The programme provides structured sports training, competitions, and life-skills development for youth of all ages.

2. Objectives

  • Promote physical fitness and healthy habits among youth.

  • Reduce youth involvement in crime, substance abuse, and risky behaviour.

  • Identify and develop sporting talent from grassroots to competitive level.

  • Provide structured training and access to quality facilities and equipment.

  • Create pathways for youth to access bursaries, academies, and professional opportunities.

  • Encourage inclusion, teamwork, leadership, and gender equality in sports.

3. Target Group

  • Children and youth (6–35 years)

  • School learners

  • Unemployed youth

  • Community sports clubs and teams

  • Aspiring coaches and sports administrators

​

4. Programme Components

​

A. Grassroots Development

  • After-school sports sessions

  • Community recreational leagues

  • Mini-sports festivals (soccer, netball, athletics, rugby, basketball, etc.)

  • Skills clinics run by local coaches

​

B. Structured Training

  • Weekly training sessions per sports code

  • Strength & conditioning

  • Nutrition guidance

  • Injury prevention & basic sports medicine

  • Performance tracking and assessments

​

C. Competitive Pathways

  • Participation in local leagues

  • Friendly matches & tournaments

  • Annual district championships

  • Assistance with trials at academies, clubs, and provincial teams

​

D. Coaching & Technical Training

  • Basic coaching certification

  • Refereeing and officiating courses

  • Sports management and administration training

​

E. Life Skills & Social Development

  • Discipline, leadership, teamwork

  • Mental health awareness

  • Gender-based violence and social responsibility workshops

  • Career guidance in sports professions

F. Talent Identification Programmes

  • Open trials

  • Fitness and skill assessments

  • Placement support (school sports bursaries, academies, clubs, scouts)

5. Facilities & Resources

  • Community sports fields

  • Indoor sports halls (if available)

  • Training equipment:

    • Balls, cones, bibs, ladders, whistles

    • First-aid kits

    • Team uniforms (soccer kits, netball kits, etc.)

  • Access to physiotherapists/medical support (periodic visits)
